Manufactured from a natural product called chitosan (KITE-oh-zan), the HemCon® Bandage is fabricated into a pliable, sterile dressing using proprietary techniques. When applied to traumatic skin, organ or penetrating injuries, the HemCon® Bandage provides superior control of bleeding and wound site adhesion. HemCon® Bandages are ideal for controlling arterial bleeding and severe external haemorrhage. The FDA-cleared HemCon® Bandage is biocompatible and forms an antibacterial barrier, reducing the potential for infection.

The HemCon® Bandage works by adhering aggressively to tissue surfaces when in contact with blood or moisture. This adhesive-like action forms a strong, flexible barrier that seals and stabilizes the wound.

HemCon® Bandages are conveniently packaged with up to a two-year shelf life, stable at room temperature and simple to use. Extremely robust, the bandage can tolerate relatively extreme compressive forces while retaining adequate flexibility to conform to curved or irregular wound surfaces. HemCon® Bandages are non heat-producing and easily removed with saline or water.

The HemCon® Bandage is safe, durable, highly effective, and does not contain human proteins or clotting factors.

How HemCon Dressings Work
HemCon Bandages work by becoming extremely sticky when in contact with blood. This adhesive-like action seals the wound and controls bleeding. HemCon products are fabricated from chitosan, a naturally occurring, bio-compatible polysaccharide. Because chitosan has a positive charge, it attracts red blood cells, which have a negative charge. The red blood cells create a seal over the wound as they are drawn into the bandage, forming a very tight, coherent seal. In addition to providing hemostasis, HemCon dressings also offer an antibacterial barrier. HemCon Bandages are an effective solution that reduces time to hemostasis, even for patients on anticoagulants.

Stages of Hemostasis
  • Bleeding occurs due to wound or puncture

  • When in contact with blood, the dressing forms a tight, supportive “first seal” that serves as an effective barrier  to control localized bleeding.
